Martial Arts Institute of New Mexico
Raymond A. Perales,
Instructor
Raymond Perales, Sensei began his journey in the martial arts in 1968 on the east coast, studying various styles of Karate, Tae Kwon Do (while in the Marine Corp), Aikido, Kung-Fu, Jujutsu and Japanese-Okinawan weaponry as a way of lifelong study to achieve self-defense capabilities, along with mental, physical, and spiritual balance in his life.
A former law enforcement officer, Chief of Police in Northeast Montana and as an instructor for the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, he has also served as a Criminal Justice consultant to the U.S. Department of Justice for over ten years. He is currently the Director of Training Services for Lamar Associates, a security and law enforcement training and technical assistance firm serving Native American tribes throughout the country. Sensei Perales believes that martial arts can be a wonderful vehicle to keeping young people out of trouble and enjoys working with at-risk youth.
He believes that proper and "mindful" martial arts training can help develop focus, self-discipline and be a tremendous positive influence for adult and young people in creating a more "human, courteous and peaceful" society.
He is a certified trainer and facilitator of Social Responsibility Training (SRT) and Moral Reconation Therapy.
Sensei Perales currently serves as a "Senior Technical Advisor" for the Institute of Traditional Martial Arts at the University of New Mexico.
About Martial Arts Institute of New Mexico
"The mission of Martial Arts Institute of New Mexico is to value the diversity of it’s student/members, and provide a supportive environment conducive for personal growth. With a focus on mentoring youth, we will accomplish this by providing a holistic approach to mind, body, and spirit training, the study of effective methods of conflict resolution and self-defense. With mutual support, we will develop positive, productive, and safe members of the world community."
It seems that nowadays, everyone seems to propose that a particular martial art or "combative sport" is the "ultimate" in self-defense, fighting, combat, etc." We make no such claim. We are however a serious organization of martial arts students and teachers, with a sincere interest in the welfare of our student/members. We believe that the practice and study of martial arts can have a long lasting and positive effect on people's lives.
We strive to provide the very best education regarding martial arts in general, and as a healthy lifestyle. Various forms of personal defense are examined along with conflict resolution, Zen meditation, martial art history and culture, and proper breathing techniques for health and wellness. Aikido as practiced by our dojo is "Budo" a comprehensive martial system that emphasizes the positive health benefits of a martial arts lifestyle, a philosophy of non-violence, coupled with streetwise effective self-defense.
The "Institute" is open to any sincere traditional martial artist regardless of any other affiliations.

“Aikido techniques employ four qualities that reflect the nature of our world. Depending on the circumstances you should be hard as a diamond, flexible as a willow, smooth flowing like water, or empty as space.”
